Ok well I’ve kinda decided that it’ll be easier to deal with zine & other distro-related stuff with this Tumblr so it’ll be more organized and not just tossed in among random pictures of baby animals and cupcakes and porn on my personal blog lolz. I just have to remember my fucking password for this Tumblr (i’ve already had to change it twice).

Anyway… I’ve had a lot of shit going on this year so I haven’t really been thinking very much about this distro, but I love zines (working on them & reading them) so I figure I’ll try to keep this going.

I just got through reading a great poetry mini zine called full-time poverty by my friend Laura-Marie (who also writes Functionally Ill which is legit one of my favorite zines & which is on this distro!, Please Pass the Plants which is great, and other zines I’ve also enjoyed), and a little fold-out, hand-written piece that I’m not sure about whether it’s a neat mini zine or a personal note to me (L-M and I are penpals) but I loved it. (Thanks L-M!!) And I’m about to read a new zine that I’m excited about by Laura-Marie’s partner Ming called With Intention: a zine about a person with narcolepsy.

So, I have a whole mess of various queer, trans*, feminist, punk, skinhead, etc. zines from Xerox Revolutionaries Distro that Hank sent me years ago after he stopped running that distro. Figured I’d see if anyone wants any of them. I can do little “grab bags” or send them out individually, whatever folks wanna do. None of these zines are on my distro, they were all on Xerox Revolutionaries, and I only have single copies of each issue of the zines. Whichever ones are leftover that I don’t donate to Sherwood Forest Zine Library & Bookshare (a new zine library & bookshare starting up in Austin, TX) or keep for myself, and that are not claimed by someone else, I will send to QZAP if they want them. (Support QZAP! They’re an awesome zine archive project with LOADS of queer/trans*/bi/pans/les/gay/etc zines available to download for free, read online, etc. Wonderful, wonderful resource.) If folks who want zines can send me a little money for the shipping, that’d be great cuz I’m broke as shit, but if not that’s okay. The zines are totally free (or if you wanna do a trade, that’s fine, too. either way). I don’t have all the zine titles written down yet, but when I do, I’ll post here again and people can pick which ones they want. Also, please know I am not endorsing any of the zines, not saying I agree with their content, or anything like that, and I haven’t read them all in a while so I don’t remember if they’re triggering so read with caution or whatever.

Oh, the posters and stickers (not pictured) are up for grabs as well.

P.S. In order to get all the zines in the picture (above), I piled zines on top of each other, so you can’t tell that I have several issues of some of the zines.

Assuming I’m feeling better, I plan on being at DC Zinefest this Saturday, July 28th, at St. Stephen’s church in Columbia Heights, hopefully with some of the zines I’m distroing. (I’m not tabling, but if I can magically get zine copies done in time, I’ll probably have them in a red backpack.) It goes from 11AM to 5PM and I dunno if I’ll be there the whole time but I’m gonna try to at least go for part of it (I have pretty bad social anxiety & am really introverted so big groups of people stress me out). If you happen to see me there, you can talk to me and let me know if you’re interested in any of the zines in my distro. (My name’s Jordan, by the way.)

MAKING NEW MAPS is a compilation zine about reconsidering, making changes to, or stopping their current or future socially and/or medically transitioning as transgender, transsexual, intersex, genderqueer or otherwise non-binary, gender variant, questioning, and other people.

Here are some ideas to get your thoughts flowing:

~ moving beyond the dominant narratives & images of trans* and genderqueer identities and experiences and transition paths

~ the pathologization of trans*, intersex, non-binary, etc. people

Ok so per request- here are instructions on how to make the superhero packer strap. good luck and have fun crafting! results may vary- I do not recommend any extreme physical activity or sorts.

retyping since the font is so small..

1. Start with a pair of (briefs) underwear, scissors, measuring tape (if needed). [image: light-colored packing dildo lying beside scissors on top of what looks like a black tee shirt with writing on it.]

2. Cut the waist band off of the underwear [image: Superman briefs underwear with scissors lying on top with the black waist band cut off.]

3. Use one of the seams left on the briefs to wrap around the base of the penis shaft (this should be very tight- if it is too loose the penis will fall out- oops) [image: cut seam of part of the Superman briefs underwear looping around the bottom of the shaft of a dildo.]

4. Take another part of the seams to wrap from the base of the shaft around the front of the balls to the top of the back balls. Topic: Essays, anecdotes, comix, poetry from Trans and Genderqueer folks telling stories of going through puberty and adolescence. Take that as broadly or specifically as you’d like; literally how your body was changing and how your brain was dealing with it, or going to a dance and how that made you feel, to coming out to your family, teachers, classmates, etc…

Audience: 7-12 grade students.

Specifics: The pieces should be free of cursing and super overt sexual content. Keep in mind that 7^th graders are about 13 years old.

Why/Purpose: I taught a piece from the zine, The Next Body, in my 7/8^th grade zine writing class, in it the writer is discussing his decision to have top surgery. After class a student approached me asking for an extra copy of the piece to give to her friend who has recently come out as Trans. “She is getting super big breasts and having a hard time dealing with it” my student told me. I gave her an extra copy of the piece and went home to dig through my books and zines to find more I could offer. It’s rough trying to find age appropriate material for a Trans kid. It’s imperative that young people who are Trans and Genderqueer see themselves in print, ideally in the curriculum but at the minimum in readings a queer, liberal, concerned, shit starting teacher passes on to them. I know, I know… all GLBT kids should see themselves in print but it’s extra hard to find Trans material, that’s why I want to start with the T as opposed to GLB.

Puberty and adolescence are hard for everyone but it’s extra alienating and difficult when you feel alone and radically different from everyone else. I want this zine to be an offering to Trans and Genderqueer kids who need to see themselves in print, to know that they are not alone. I want it to offer comfort and hope to some young people who may be struggling. I want it to open the eyes and hearts of non-trans kids so they become allies. I also want it to open up dialogue between students, parents and teachers. It’s my job to teach students reading and writing but the bigger more satisfying and important part of my job is to offer support, care, and guidance to ALL kids in their emotional and personal development. Unfortunately, as a society, we’re forgetting some kids, we’re looking the other way when Trans kids need us to look right at them and say “You are okay, you are in fact, amazing - just the way you are. And you’re not alone either.” I’d like this zine to be a move towards that.

I keep this quote in mind when I’m writing curriculum and deciding what to teach for the year. Perhaps it will inspire you.

“When those who have the power to name and to socially construct reality choose not to see or hear you, whether you are dark-skinned, old, disabled, female, or speak with a different accent or dialect than theirs, when someone with the authority of a teacher, say, describes a world and you are not in it, there is a moment of psychic disequilibrium, as if you looked into a mirror and saw nothing.”

On October 5, the container ship MV Rena ran aground on Astrolabe Reef, resulting in an oil spill that is already being regarded as the worst environmental disaster in New Zealand’s history.

Clean up efforts are underway, but the danger to local wildlife remains high. A raft of Little Blue Penguins has already been negatively impacted by the spill.

The Kiwi yarn store Skeinz has put out a call for penguin sweaters — an adorable-sounding but very necessary accessory that helps keep the birds from preening their feathers and ingesting the oil.

Skeinz has posted knitting instructions for anyone willing to lend a hand

the self: self-care / where the self ends & community begins / expressing yr needs / creating & sustaining personal boundaries

accessibility: geographic accessibility / accessibility to language / pretension / the “academic industrial complex”
